December saw me take on three good hikes in the off-season.

I had a specific reason for revisiting The Bangor Trail from the Bangor end on Dec 21st, the shortest day of the year. While on ‘The Walk of Hope’ with the fabulous people of Foxford Ramblers Walking Club the previous Saturday, two companions from Bangor had told me of works being carried out on the Trail that they weren’t at all happy with. I just had to investigate, fearful of another example of environmental vandalism by public bodies.

This Saturday a number of organisations will be participating in what should prove an interesting event in Mayo.

Birdwatch Ireland, the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and others will be present from 10 am to 4 pm at the Pontoon Bridge Hotel, informing visitors of how they might be able to help them survey Irish wildlife. This is a free event and all are welcome to simply drop by and see if you can help any one of the organisations present in their work.

A Foxford man has been recognised for his work in the local forestry sector.

The story of Captain Francisco De Cuellar of the Spanish Armada who was washed ashore on Streedagh beach in Sligo in 1588 will be re-told in what promises to be an exciting fusion of physical theatre, film and live music in Belmullet Arts Centre.

Housing Associations in Charlestown, Foxford and Swinford are to receive funding to carry out maintenance and improvement works in their areas.

Foxford anglers make all the headlines this week with the Mayfly Hotel angling event raising substantial funds for Mayo General and a local angler lands a 24.5lbs salmon on the Cloongee Fishery.

The angling season is slowly coming to an end in Mayo, but anglers are still reporting good catches of salmon and trout.

Salmon anglers are having a whale of a time on the River Moy with the Western River Basin District (WBD) reporting that nearly 500 salmon were caught in one day.
